Zoom Rail

9th January 2020.

HS2 Ltd’s Education Programme forms part of HS2’s broader approach to create skills and employment opportunities. The aim is to educate students and their families about HS2 and the employment and training opportunities it will create and support.

Zoom Rail is a primary school programme that challenges pupils aged 7-11 to plan, design and build a fictional railway of the future. It is co-created by High Speed 2 and educators, Zoom Rail takes pupils on an exciting crosscurricular learning experience through science, technology,
engineering, arts and maths (STEAM).

Through a combination of live workshops and an online games hub, children develop valuable skills for the classroom and gain an understanding of future careers in transport and infrastructure.

Session 1 - Skills for work
The children chose a mystery bag containing a team building challenge that encouraged pupils
to reflect on their own skills and consider skills needed for the world of work.
Choice of mystery envelopes for the groups to choose from highlighting different skills for work: Creativity, Problem solving, Communication, Organisation, Working together, Evaluation

Session 2 - Uncovering careers

The children worked in pairs with a tablet and were asked to watch at least 2 short clips showcasing a different career.
Links were made to school subjects e.g. Designer (art, design and technology, computing), Engineer (geography, design and technology, maths, science)

Session 3 - Route Planning

Using a large coordinate grid laid out on the floor with towns, woods, river etc marked on it the pupils were given trains and track and asked to consider where to route the railway from city A to city B. They read
the information about the implications of planning the route through each square on the grid and discussed their options.
