Autumn 2 - Time Traveller
Tick, tock, tick, tock. The hands on the clock never stop. From the moment we are born, from toddler to teen, middle age to elderly, time stops for no man. Find out what happens to our bodies and brains as we grow older, and how we cope with these changes. How long does a human baby take to grow inside the womb? Does it take longer than an elephant calf? Or a kitten? Take a good look at yourself. How has your face changed since you were a baby and how will it change as you grow older? Can you photograph it, change it, age it? And what would happen if the clock struck 13? In Tom’s Midnight Garden, he travels to the past. Imagine that you could time travel too. When would you like to travel to and what would you like to see? Will you head back to your past or into your future? You decide.

Home Learning Workbook
02/11/21 ENGAGE AFTERNOON: We had an engage afternoon to hook us into our new topic. During the afternoon, we learnt about composition, colour, light and shade in photography and used a computer program to edit close up photographs of our faces. We adjusted some of these to see how they effected the image.
02/11/21 ENGAGE AFTERNOON: During the afternoon, we also learnt about Andy Warhol and Pop Art. We learnt how to use computer software to create this effect on a repeated image of ourselves.
02/11/21 ENGAGE AFTERNOON: We also looked at an app that changed images to make us look younger. We learnt about how our features change as we get older.
02/11/21 ENGAGE AFTERNOON: We also looked at an app that changed images to make us look older. We learnt about how our features change as we get older.
04/11/21 OUTDOOR LEARNING DAY: During outdoor learning day, we learnt what a journey stick is. We created our own by collecting things we found on the ground as we went on a walk around the school grounds.
05/11/21 ENGAGE: Science: We learnt about the different stages of development in humans. We used these to categorise different moments of our own lives. We created a timeline and learnt what we could do at different ages.
11/11/2021: DEVELOP: Maths and Science: For Maths Week and Science Day, we combined our skills to learn about how to present population data. We learnt about how population data has changed over the last 60 years and then we used our Maths skills to present this is a line graph.
11/11/2021: Remembrance Day - During the week, we learnt about Remembrance Day by looking at the different poppies that we see in everyday life. We created our own poppies and wore them with pride. We also created some free verse poetry related to war. We used the features we had been learning during the week along with emotive language, imagery and powerful vocabulary to upskill our poems. We shared our learning in assembly with Year 6.
12/11/21 DEVELOP: Science: We learnt that reaction times get longer as we get older. We tested our own reaction times with a game on the computer and using a ruler, measuring the reaction times by where on the ruler we managed to catch it.
19/11/21 Anti-Bullying Week - During the week, we followed the theme of 'one kind word' and all chose a kind word to write down. We will remember these words when we are feeling unhappy. On Monday, we wore odd socks to show we are all unique. We also focussed on cyber bullying as part of our Computing learning. We gave advice to people on how to be safe in different scenarios.
18/11/21 and 02/12/21 DRAMA: We have been preparing something very special for you. It's a BIG surprise so we're not going to say anymore.
29/11/21 RE: During RE we learnt about different stories from the bible that taught Christians about greed and generosity. We selected a line from three different characters and created a chant of these to learn about how these stories effected the characters.
01/12/21 ADVENT CALENDAR: We loved opening our advent calendar this week. We shared the songs together and loved learning new words to some of the songs. We are looking forward to continuing this through December.
02/12/21 TREES: As a whole school, we were set the challenge of creating trees that could be hung on the outside of school for a special walk round in Barnburgh. We created these natural trees.
09/12/21: Our visit to Leeds Grand Theatre to see Bedknobs and Broomsticks: The Magical Musical.
10/12/21 INNOVATE: Throughout the last two weeks, we have been completing the innovate challenge. We were challenged to make our own time machines. We worked in groups to use what we know about time machines to plan what we wanted it to look like and how we would make it. We worked in small teams to put our creations into action. We showed how much we had learnt during the process by expressing our learning in Mrs Kay on Zoom.
Year 5's Mini Musical
It's finally here! Year 5 have been working so hard this half term in their Topic learning. As part of our Drama and Music learning, we have been learning about Musical Theatre. This was deep in our 'Time Traveller' topic and so we wanted to create our own musical along this theme.
During our research, we learnt about what musical theatre is, how musicals are made and what they are made up of. We began by looking at a range of different clips from musicals - but this didn't seem quite enough so we were lucky enough to go and see a real life musical. We visited The Grand Theatre in Leeds to watch Bedknobs and Broomsticks: A Magical Musical. We watched with anticipation as we saw the story come to life.
After this, we combined all the different elements needed to perform a musical together...we began by singing and dancing to a pre-existing song 'When I Grow Up'. We created our own script naming it 'A Treasured Dream' with a Grandad character, a granddaughter character and a Mum character. We cast these characters through a class vote. Once we had these in place, we began work learning the script.
Following this, we wrote our own lyrics for a song that already exists to fit with our story. The song, which was originally called '7 years', was renamed as '4 years'. We went through the stages of Grandad's life through the song lyrics that we wrote.
After this we created a dance section to show the 7 ages of man. We created these dance parts of life ourselves to show how man changes over time.
We absolutely loved this project and enjoyed sharing this with the rest of school via Zoom. Please see below for videos of sections of the overall performance.
