Hi Year 5,
Welcome back to our last half term in Year 5. Mrs Langley and I can't thank you enough for all the lovely photos and messages we have been receiving. It is amazing that you are still sharing with us the wonderful things you are getting up to at home and how much some of you are missing being at school. We also absolutely love seeing so many of you each week on Zoom. Come and join us if you haven't already!
For this last half term, we will be continuing our topic of 'Allotment'. It is such a shame that we cannot do this topic together in school, because so many of you seem to be loving it, but it is brilliant to see the amazing things you are growing whilst at home. Please keep visiting each of the Year 5 Home Learning pages for new reading, maths, English and topic learning. The English lessons are linked to our topic learning.
We had some amazing entries for Mrs Langley's challenges over the past few weeks, however things seem to have gone a little quiet recently. But don't worry, Mrs Langley and I are working on new ways to challenge you all. From now on, our Zooms will be taking place every Wednesday and we will be chatting to you on there about new challenges and about any ideas you might have for Zoom activities.
Don't forget to keep sending your photos and emails to show us what you have been doing at home. Keep a look out for the next Zoom meetings coming very soon.
Love from Miss Appleyard and Mrs Langley x
SPORTS DAY 2020!
As well as the reading comprehensions that are already on this home learning page, here are some new additions that are linked to recent times.
A message from Miss Appleyard
Hello Year 5 :)
Welcome back and happy Summer Term! I hope you have all had a lovely Easter break and have enjoyed plenty of: sun, fun, family time, rest and most importantly...chocolate! I have absolutely loved reading your emails, speaking to you on the phone, looking at your pictures and videos and for a few of you, seeing you in person. I can't wait until we are all back together again and I can see all of your smiling faces in person. I'm sure we will all have so many stories and memories to tell, pictures to share and lots of wonderful work to look at. Hopefully it won't be too much longer before we can do that!
Until then... please make sure you keep the emails coming. Whether it is to ask a question because you are struggling, to send me some pictures, to ask for a phone call or just for a chat and a catch up, I love receiving them all! It's really important that we keep in touch and stick together. I am so impressed with what I have seen so far and you should all be so proud of yourselves. We are all in this together and we will all get through it together too.
Now that you have enjoyed the Easter break, today marks the start of the Summer term. The start of this Summer term will not be like any that we have had before, but it will be one that we remember forever. Just like before the Easter holidays, there will be work added to the Year 5 Home Learning Page each week for you to have a go at. You will also notice that there are now a couple of other home learning pages. There is now a specific one for Maths, which has some new White Rose video tutorials and activities on that are brilliant. There is the Home Learning Photos page, which I am constantly updating when I receive your wonderful emails with pictures and videos attached. You might even spot a video of me dancing on there! Also, there is now an 'Allotment Topic' home learning page. Please remember, that as well as the home learning page, there is still the option to have booklets made for you to collect from school or that I can deliver to you, if this is easier for some of you. Just email me on firstname.lastname@example.org if you want anything like this.
If we were starting the Summer term back in school, like we normally would, I would now be looking forward to seeing some of your amazing Topic Challenges for our new topic 'Allotment' and we would have been starting our Engage lessons. If you head over to the Allotment home learning page, you will find both of these things on there - topic challenge and engage activities. I have actually already seen that some of you are already doing allotment type activities at home, but for those who haven't been, there are now ideas to have a go at. There is also a competition on there, which links perfectly to our new topic! The 'Creative Composting Challenge' is on the main home learning page and the Allotment page and would be a great activity for you to have a go at, that could also potentially win you a brilliant prize! How amazing would that be! Just like all of the home learning pages, the Allotment topic page will keep being updated. Keep an eye out on the app for notices of when something new is added or keep checking the different pages and remember.. keep emailing me over all the amazing things you have been up to!
For those of you that haven't already seen, on the Covid19 tab of the school website there is a section for children as well as adults. Keep checking that page and if you head over to it today, you will see a special message from all of the staff at Barnburgh. Hopefully it will make you smile, it did me! There is also a tab where you can see what us teachers have been getting up to during this time away from school as well. Unfortunately, I didn't manage to get a picture of me with the many bags of Space Raiders I ate at the start of lockdown but you'll be glad to hear that they have all gone now, so I am back to trying to be good and healthy! :)
As much as I am loving seeing all of the amazing things you have all been getting up to and seeing you do things that we perhaps wouldn't normally have time for, I am missing you all so very much! We just have to remember that we are all staying at home to protect each other and that it won't be forever. Soon enough, I am sure we will be back together in Barnburgh and I'm sure we will be sharing our memories for a very long time! I can't wait for this day to come, but for now.. keep safe, keep emailing, keep learning but most importantly, keep smiling!
Lots of love,
Miss Appleyard x

Once this week of home learning is over on Friday, for 2 weeks, it is then your Easter holiday.

Stargazers Topic Home Learning
We have been looking at this topic during the Spring Term
Stargazers - innovate: To complete our 'Stargazers' topic, in class we have started our innovate project of designing a rocket which can be launched. Please find below the innovate project board, which the children are aware of. They have already designed and labelled their own rocket.
At home, have a go at making the rocket that they have designed and launch them in your garden. Photograph the finished rocket and video the launch of the rocket, if possible. Use baking soda and vinegar to launch the rockets.
