Year 3 2019 to 2020

Hi Everybody in Year 3,

Welcome back to our last half term in Year 3. Mrs Vockins and I can't thank you enough for all the lovely photos and messages we have been receiving proving to us what wonderful things you are getting up to at home and how much some of you are missing being at school. We also absolutely love seeing so many of you each week on Zoom. Come and join us if you haven't already!

For this last half term, we will be continuing our topic of 'Tribal Tales'. Please visit each of the Year 3 Home Learning subject pages for new learning for Guided Reading, Maths, English and Topic. All these lessons are linked to our topic apart from our Maths learning which is linked to White Rose Maths.

In addition to this learning in Year 3, we will be continuing a weekly challenge (with a new name) called...'Mrs Vockins' Variety Challenge'. This is a little fun activity that we are challenging you to complete. Each week a new challenge will be on the app and website on a Monday morning and then you will have by Thursday morning to complete this challenge. Certificates for 1st, 2nd and 3rd will continue to be delivered each week. When you have completed your challenge please can you send this to Mrs Vockins on her email address l.vockins@barnburghprimary.com. This can be presented however you like, e.g. it could be a typed list or a photo of a written list, etc.

Don't forget to keep sending your photos and emails to show us what you have been doing at home. Keep a look out for the next Zoom meetings coming very soon.

Love from Mrs Kay and Mrs Vockins x

W/C 23/03/2020: Our Home Learning so far. We have been very busy at home.

19/03/2020 - RE Morning - The Easter Story. On Thursday we were lucky enough to walk through the Easter Story. We experienced a range of different activities and had lots of fun completing this memorable experience.

17/03/2020 - On Tuesday, we read a funny E-book that told us all about how germs spread. We then put some moisturiser on our hands to make them 'sweaty'. One person in each group applied 'germs' (glitter) to their hands. We then shook hands, high-fived and clapped our hands together. The 'germs' spread to everyone in our teams. We used different coloured 'germs' so we could see how far they spread. We also found 'germs' all over the classroom. This was a fantastic, fun way to show how important it is to wash our hands and avoid touching each other where possible.

16/03/2020 - Science. We tried our foaming mixture in all of our volcanoes. We could hear the fizzing and see the bubbling eruptions inside our volcanoes but we didn't quite have the quantities to make them all erupt. The video below shows one successful eruption.

16/03/2020 - Science. We completed the making of our Volcanoes and decided it was time to try and make them erupt. We used Science to explore the reaction when we mixed vinegar, baking powder and washing-up liquid. We create a foaming reaction in class in small cups. We decided to try and do this in our larger volcanoes.

10/03/2020 - GOLDEN AFTERNOON - For achieving the joint highest percentage of attendance during Spring Term 1, we earned a Golden Afternoon. We had a vote in class and chose to go to the park. We had a great time enjoying time with friends and celebrating our attendance award.

05/03/2020 - World Book Day! We completed different reading themed activities with the Key Stage 2 teachers. Here we are enjoying decoding children's books that have been given in emojis. The highest score was 14/20.

05/03/2020 - World Book Day! We enjoyed Buddy Reading with Foundation Stage on World Book Day.

05/03/2020 - World Book Day! We dressed as our favourite book characters for World Book Day.

09/03/2020 - Volcanoes! We have begun making the bases for our volcanoes. We reshaped a bottle, covered it with glue and newspaper and left it to dry. We will be adding more layers next week before painting it to make it look more realistic.

03/03/2020 - Get Ready for Battle! We looked at information on what formations the Ancient Greeks used in battle. We became the different soldiers and took up the formation. We talked about why certain soldiers were put in certain positions. We enjoyed taking on these roles.

02/03/2020 - RE Questionnaires. To complete our RE Topic of 'Why do people pray?' we created a questionnaire to ask all the children in our school. We then went into every classroom in small groups to conduct the questionnaire. We got some very interesting responses and learnt a lot from our school.

26/02/2020 - Courtroom Drama! We learnt about how the Ancient Greeks solved conflicts using a jury. We became characters and took on roles in the courtroom to solve a conflict. Two people were accused on damaging property. The jury listened to all the witness statements and found them guilty. We really enjoyed acting out the courtroom drama and learning about how problems were solved.

10/02/2020 - The real test. As our structures survived our own low intensity earthquakes, we decided to give them the real test with the help of Mr Johnson. Mr Johnson tested all our structures to see if they could survive a very intense earthquake. Some of these did not survive. Take a look at the tests below.

10/02/2020 - Earthquake Testing. We worked as a team again to place our structures in out unstable bases (jelly). We shook these bases increasing the intensity as we wanted to see if our structures could survive. We didn't quite give them the intensity needed in a real earthquake so all the structures survived.

10/02/2020 - The completed structures. We completed our structures using team work. Time to see if they would survive an earthquake.

07/02/2020 - Topic. Challenge - to create a structure that could withstand an earthquake. We were given mini marshmallows and cocktail sticks to create our structures. We have begun to use shapes to make strong bases for our structures. Keep a look out next week when we finish our structures and test them with an earthquake.

06/02/2020 - Drama. To start our learning about Greek Myths and hook into our new topic we read the story of Theseus and the Minotaur. We learnt the story and created a whole class freeze frame of the story. We then went into pairs to create our own freeze frames. The rest of the class had to guess which scene we were recreating. This helped us to understand the Myth.

05/02/2020 - Music. We worked in teams to use musical instruments to create a Volcano Soundscape. We tried to recreate the different sounds heard when a volcano erupts. We listened to some samples first and then created our own. We enjoyed listening to how each team had a different take on this activity.

05/02/2020 - PE. During our cross-curricular PE lesson, we explored some of the events that were competed in during the Ancient Olympics. One of these were wrestling...so we decided to do the sprint race instead! We loved trying to beat our personal best and each other.

24/01/2020 - Golden Time. For achieving 100% attendance last week, we were rewarded with 30 minutes of Golden Time. Walt's Wood won our class vote so we spent our Golden Time playing in Walt's Wood. Look at what we got up to!

20/01/2020 - Topic learning - Rock Balancing. As a class, we looked at a range of photos of sculptures created by the artist Andy Goldsworthy. One of the structures he creates are 'Rock Balances'. We used our knowledge of rocks to create a sculpture of our own. We had to use a range of resources from around school. Working as a team, we all managed to create a different effect.

Spring Term - Home Learning. For our current topic 'Tremors of the Gods and Mortals' we have begun bringing in our learning created at home. We have amazed the class with diagrams of volcanoes to Greek writing.

17/01/2020 - Greek Artefacts. We received some Greek Artefacts from Doncaster Museum Loans. We studied these objects to see what we could learn about Ancient Greece. We guessed what these objects could be and what uses they might have. Then, we decided to sketch these in our books, taking extra care with the pictures and patterns.

16/01/2020 - Earthquakes...drop, cover, hold!!

16/01/2020 - Earthquake in action!!

16/01/2020 - Earthquakes!! To begin our new English topic of Newspaper Reports, we were working quietly in the classroom when all of a sudden...we experienced several Earthquakes!! The tables were shaking, our books and resources were falling all over the floor and objects were flying through the air. Luckily, we survived to tell the tale...hopefully this will inspire great Newspaper Reports.

14/01/2020 - Rock Investigation. We have been exploring a range of rocks. We handled them to see what properties they had. Then, we compared what we could see and feel with what we read about the different types of rock. We guessed what they were called from their properties, This helped us to learn the names and properties of a range of rocks.

09/01/2020 - Zoom Rail. We were very lucky to have some visitors in school from Zoom Rail. Through cross-curricular learning the children experienced Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Maths. We were educated about HS2 and the employment and training opportunities it creates. The children were very inspired by the expert speakers.

04/12/19 - RE Innovate Activity. Hindus believe Ganesha helps them to remove obstacles from their lives. We created our own themed games. We added obstacles that could occur in these activities on some of the squares and this made the player move back so many places. This helped us to think about setbacks and how we overcome these. We enjoyed playing the games with our friends.

03/12/2019 - To kick start our learning about Dilemma Narratives, we created drama pieces using the conscience alley method. Children enjoyed becoming the 'voices in their heads' when battling with your conscience. They were all giving different dilemmas and thought about all the reasons why these actions should be taken or not.

02/12/19 - Express Event. We held our first Express Event for our Topic: Predator! We invited our grown ups to join us to complete lots of activities that we have enjoyed during our Topic learning, such as, dissecting flowers, creating games using Scratch and a range of art work. We had a great time and hope our adults did too.

Children in Need 15/11/19 - For Children in Need this year, the theme was Get Together, Get Active. As a whole Key Stage, we got together and got active in the hall following three of the Active 8 videos made by Joe Wicks on the BBC Children in Need website. We had lots of fun!!

13/11/19 - Following on from watching the anti-bullying scenarios and voting for which path to take, we were given our own problems to respond to. We worked in teams to read the problems and decided what advice we would give to the victims, friends and even the bullies. Watch our advice videos below!

During this week, we have been learning about how change starts with us for anti-bullying week. We watched some videos with bullying scenarios in. At the end of each video, we had to decide what action to take. We decided on actions such as: speak to the victim, speak to the bully, tell an adult, give advice, etc. The children showed kindness and thoughtfulness when dealing with uncomfortable situations. We voted anonymously. They then gave great explanations about which path we should choose and debated this with each other to come to a joint decision.

Odd Socks Day - On Tuesday 12th November, we took part in odd socks day by wearing odd socks with our uniforms. We did this as part of anti-bullying week to raise awareness.

11/11/19 - During our RE Develop lesson, we used the masks we created last week in a drama piece to tell the story of Ganesh. We listened to the story and recreated the actions. We used our masks to symbolise the moment when Ganesh's head was replaced by an elephant's head.

Autumn Term 1 - Spanish Learning - During Autumn Term 1, we have been learning Spanish with Mrs Kilby. We played Splat to learn the numbers to 10. We made finger puppets to have simple conversations. We learnt how to say hello and goodbye, ask how someone is feeling and how to respond and asking someones name and responding.

05/11/19 - In preparation for Remembrance Day next week, the whole school have been set the challenge of making a poppy. We followed step-by-step instructions to cut, fasten. attach, connect and combine these materials to make our poppies. We will remember them!

04/11/19 - RE - Engage - For our Engage activity, to kick start our Hinduism learning, we made elephant masks out of paper plates. We created our own designs, coloured these, added accessories and then worked out how to attach them to our faces. Look out for these masks being used for some Drama next week.

04/11/19 - Performance Poetry. We performed a range of Haiku poems about Remembrance Day. We used our voices and actions to tell the story of the poems.

22/10/19 - We watched videos and looked at detailed pictures of Birds of Prey in flight. We then tried to recreate these images using pencil drawings. We created the outline shapes carefully and then added details to the bird's body parts.

18/10/19 - Topic - Art work. We created owls for our topic of Predator! We created a background for our owls using pastels. We then cut out an owl shape from black paper. We used chalks to create patterns and markings on our owls to make them look more realistic.

10/10/19 - Some of the children in our class represented the school in the Year 3/4 Cross Country Competition at the Keepmoat Stadium. Well done to Ollie, Hughie, Poppy and Ateesha for taking part!

10/10/19 - World Mental Health Day. We took part in some Art Therapy as one of the activities during this day.

10/10/19 - World Mental Health Awareness Day - being creative in Walt's Wood.

GOLDEN TIME: On 26/09/19, we celebrated 'golden time' for achieving 100% attendance the previous week. We chose to learn in Walt's Wood, play football and ride our bikes and scooters on the playground. We had lots of fun!

PE: On 25/09/19, we were set a challenge to work as a team to 'cross the river'. We were given a certain number of lily pads to safely cross the river. We had to watch out for predators. If we fell in the water, we had to return to the beginning. It took team work, perseverance and courage to complete the challenges.

DEVELOP: On 24/09/19, we dissected lilies to find out about the different parts of a plant. We cut these off carefully and named them. We found out about the jobs the different parts of the plant does. We then labelled these.

ENGAGE: On 19/09/19, we found out how fossils were formed and then made our own. We made a mould using Plasticine. We then selected a dinosaur model to press into the mould. We mixed Plaster of Paris and poured this into the mould. We left this overnight and it made our fossils!

MATHS: On 19/09/19, we used base 10 equipment to support us answering our Maths questions. We worked in pairs to make the numbers and check the calculations.

On 13/09/19, we used the laptops to explore the program Scratch. We used Scratch to make a predator chasing prey game. We set the instructions for the character to follow and checked that this worked.

ENGAGE: On 10/09/19, we found out more about predators by looking at food chains. We explored the vocabulary consumer, producer, predator and prey and categorised animals in the food chains.

ENGAGE: Birds of Prey Visitor - On 09/09/19, Sandra brought some birds of prey into school. We met four different birds: two owls, a falcon and a kestrel. We got to hold two of the birds and watch Tiffin fly around the hall. He wouldn't come back! We loved our engage activity for our topic: Predator!
