Learning to shine together

Summer 1

Our topic for this half term is 'Under the Sea'. We are starting with a pirate theme. Please read our newsletter below for more information about this half term.

On Wednesday 14th March, we dressed as pirates for a fun themed pirate day!

On 14/04/21 during our pirate day, a shark came to visit. We were super excited to see it floating above us! Thank you to Connie and Mr Johnson for bringing him in.

During our first week back (w/b 12/04/21), we made treasure maps by staining ripped paper with tea bags. After this, we looked at all the things we'd like to include on a treasure map and recreated these by drawing on our maps.

14/04/21 - Pirates love to count their treasure and as part of our maths learning, we have been counting up to 20 pieces of treasure.

20/4/21 - We started the day with a relaxing peer massage. We did this whilst listening to calming piano music and had a seascape picture on the board to help us feel calm and relaxed before starting the day.

20/04/21 - We have been learning how to write a postcard. We imagined that we had been on a holiday and talked about how we could send a message to tell a friend all about our holiday. We wrote our postcards using our phonic knowledge. We then drew a picture on the other side of the postcard.

22/04/21 - We have worked collaboratively to recognise and order numerals to 20. We cut out each fish and placed it so it was swimming in the correct order.

26/04/21 - Today the children have experience life on a pirate ship. The children were able to participate in a range of activities that support all areas of learning including; making a healthy fruit salad, drawing what they can see through a telescope, creating treasure maps, counting treasure and scrubbing the decks!

27/04/21 - Following on from our experience of life on a pirate ship, we wrote a message to tell someone all about what happens on a pirate ship. We placed our message in a bottle to send.

29/04/21 - In our maths learning this week, we have been counting objects within 20 and identifying the corresponding numeral. We have worked collaboratively to recognise numbers to 20 and count out the correct number of objects.

13/05/21 - We have been embedding counting and representing numbers to 20 this week by making jellyfish and anemones. We used paint to decorate each tentacle by reading a number and painting the corresponding number of dots.

14/05/21 - We have continued to embed our counting skills within our PE lesson this week. We completed a range of activities on a circuit including: shuttle run, speed bounce, read and complete actions, cone pick up and ball throw. The children worked in groups and each group counted and recorded their own scores at each activity using a range of ways to represent numbers.

May 2021 - The children have engaged in a wide range of independent learning opportunities through free flow play. The children have developed skills such as: fine motor skills, working together as a team, introducing a storyline into their play, sharing ideas with others, constructing by using a range of strategies and with a purpose in mind, reviewing their activities and changing their approach as needed and using a wide range of vocabulary and language related to their learning and their experiences. The children's independent learning is centered around the topic and children's current interests.
