A message from Miss Taylor

Hello Year 1 :)

Welcome back and happy Summer Term! I hope you have all had a lovely Easter break and have enjoyed plenty of sun, fun, family time, rest and chocolate! I have absolutely loved reading your emails, speaking to you on the phone, looking at your pictures and videos and for a few of you, seeing you in person. I can't wait until we are all back together again and I can see all of your smiling faces in person. Hopefully, we will be able to enjoy some more time together in class later in the term. I have my fingers and my toes crossed!! I can imagine you have all grown so much and I bet we have a few more teeth missing!!

Now that you have enjoyed the Easter break, today marks the start of the Summer term. The start of this Summer term will not be like any that we have had before, but it will be one that we remember forever. Just like before the Easter holidays, there will be work added to the Year 1 Home Learning Page each week for you to have a go at. I will continue to update all the pages so remember to hover over the year one page to see what other learning opportunities are available. Please remember, there is still the option to have booklets made for you to collect from school or that I can deliver to you, if this is easier for some of you. Just email me on h.taylor@barnburghprimary.com if you want anything like this.

This week we were due to go on our school trip. However, due to the circumstances we are unable to. Below I have attached some activities that you may want to complete to hook the children into the new topic Dinosaur Planet. Visit a natural history museum to see real life dinosaur bones, models and fossils. Listen to information from museum experts and ask lots of interesting questions. If you click the highlighted link you can go on a virtual tour of the National History Museum! Alternatively, set up a ‘Dino hunt’, encouraging the children to follow maps and plans to find examples of hidden ‘dinosaur treasures’ in the garden. Uncover dinosaur footprints, giant claws, teeth or even dinosaur nests with eggs. Use excavation tools to find fossils in soil or sand trays, cleaning them carefully with soft brushes so they don’t break. Then, encourage the children to talk about their discoveries, using the correct dinosaur vocabulary. Remember to send emails to h.taylor@barnburghprimary.com of your fun, exciting activities!

As much as I am loving seeing all of the amazing things you have all been getting up to and seeing you do things that we perhaps wouldn't normally have time for, I am missing you all so very much!  Hopefully, I will organise a Zoom meeting with you all soon so I can see you all :) So remember to keep getting in touch and remember I am only an email away if you would like anything :)

Keep safe and keep smiling. I am so proud of each and every one of you!

Lots of love,

Miss Taylor xxx

W/C 01.06.20 - RE Learning: Pentecost

On Sunday 31st May, Christians around the world celebrated Pentecost.

Watch this little video to learn about the story of Pentecost.

Why not retell the story yourself? You could create your own little video. There are a some colouring sheets too!

Activities linked to Pentecost:
  • Look up different images of the Holy Spirit and recreate them yourself or create your own.
  • Let's Talk! Read or listen to the Pentecost story together. How did the disciples change? How did they feel before the Holy Spirit came? How did they feel afterwards? Why was this?
  • Reenact the story of Pentecost - perhaps you could make a little video!

Creative Composting Challenge!

BDR Waste Treatment Facility

BDR are proud to launch their creative composting challenge!
This competition is open to all school aged children (ages 4-16) living in Barnsley, Doncaster and Rotherham.

Composting is an easy way to reduce our waste and help out our planet.

Did you know, composting at home for just one year can save global warming gases equivalent to all the CO2 your kettle produces annually, or your washing machine produces in three months?

BDR want you to help them promote this and get more people to compost- and they want you to be as creative as possible.
It can be a drawing, a story, a poem, a play, a vlog, an animation, building a model….or wherever your imagination takes you.

There will be nine prizes available, each worth £100.

If you’re in Scouting or Guides the Creative Composting challenge could contribute to some of your badges such as:
• Beavers – skills challenge or creative activity badge
• Cubs – skills challenge or artist activity badge
• Scouts – creative challenge
• Explorers – creative arts activity badge
• Rainbows – Drawing, nature, recycling, storyteller
• Brownies – Painting, performing, zero waste
• Guides – Campaigning, photography, vlogging, upcycling
• Rangers – Animation, blogging, volunteering

**COMPETITION CLOSES 9TH OF MAY 2020**

Maths- Scheme of Learning.

White Rose Maths - White Rose is the Maths scheme which we follow in school when planning our daily maths lessons. For the purpose of school closures, White Rose have set up a Home Learning page which parents/carers can access for work for their children.

The Maths work which is on there is in line with what the children would now be learning, if they were attending school. We believe that this will continue to be updated as time goes on, for as long as necessary.

This is a brilliant Maths resource to keep the children on track and up to date with their maths learning for their Year group.
