Not forgetting the amazing videos of you learning to ride bikes, playing in the sun and reading we both love seeing all the amazing things that you have been doing at home! The Zoom chats have become our favourite time of the week. We’ve made airplanes, dinosaurs and snakes, we’ve managed scavenger hunts and fun games. It is great to see you laughing and playing along with each other and the excitement of telling us about what you’ve been doing and showing us your many creations!
This half term we are continuing with our topic of ‘Dinosaur Planet’’. Have a look on the Year 1 home learning subject pages for new learning for Phonics, Guided Reading, Maths, English and Topic. Remember that if you need resources sending home please do not hesitate to get in contact with me and I will arrange for them to be sent out.
Miss Machin will continue to set her Phonics Challenges, we have both been blown away with the effort and time you’ve put into completing these and we can’t wait to see what you will get up to this half term! I know Miss Machin has some very amazing activities planned. In addition to this, Mrs Kilby has started to produce some amazing Art lessons which you can follow along with at home! The videos can be found on the website home page under the more tab at the very bottom call ‘Art with Mrs Kilby’ It would be brilliant if you could send any completed art to Mrs Kilby’s e-mail address - firstname.lastname@example.org

50 must reads for Year 1...
Phonics in Year 1
Phonics is taught on a daily basis within class. The children will receive a 30 minute phonics session at the beginning of the day. The phonics will then be reinforced through guided reading, literacy and all other lessons. Below are the sounds which will be taught in Year 1.
Lots of free games for each phase, especially good for reading non-words. You can also subscribe to access more games
The phonics screening check is taken individually by all children in Year 1 in England, and is usually taken in June. It is designed to give teachers and parents information on how your child is progressing in phonics. There are two sections in this 40-word check and it assesses phonics skills and knowledge learned through Reception and Year 1. The children will be given real and nonsense words.
It checks that your child can:
- Sound out and blend graphemes in order to read simple words.
- Read phonically decodable one-syllable and two-syllable words, e.g. cat, sand, windmill.
- Read a selection of nonsense words which are referred to as pseudo words.
Spring- Moon Zoom.
03.02.20- Space terrain: In topic we looked at a space terrain and what objects we would find such as space rocks, asteroids and planets. We created a space terrain and had to use mathematical language to direct our partners around the terrain. The children enjoyed the exciting mission!
5.3.2020 World Book Day- We joined in with buddy reading with Year 5 and we read our favourite books. We then worked with Year 2 to complete different activities such as The Three Little Pig role play, word searches, reading stories and origami book marks. It was a really fun day!
5.3.20- World Book Day Costumes in Year One.
04.3.20- RE: We have been looking at sacred places. This week we looked at a Mosque and the features and artifacts that are linked to a Mosque. We looked at the prayer mats and decided to make a class mat. We learnt a new skill called cross-stitch and used this skill to create different lines and patterns on the mat. The children loved learning about the sacred places and loved sewing.
04.03.20- Geography: We used Google Maps on the laptops and ipads to find different features on Earth. We discovered lakes, rivers, trees and mountains along with other features. The children are becoming a lot more confident on the laptops.
28.2.20- In Year One we looked at the artist Peter Thorpe. He creates exciting space-themed pictures including patterns and bright colours. The children were encouraged to use oil pastels to create a piece of space-themed art with the main theme being rockets.
27.2.20- Author visit: In Year One, we were lucky enough to receive a visit form Gail Jones. The children enjoyed listening to her stories and even had the chance to ask her questions. At the end of the session the children drew some pictures of robots for a book they would like to write.
25.02.20- RE. In RE our big question is 'Why are some places sacred?' we looked at the Jewish celebration 'Purim'. During Purim they eat the traditional cookies called Hamantaschens. The children followed instructions to make the triangular cookies and were able to work in small teams and turn take to do this. The children were eager throughout the session and enjoyed trying to cookies.
12.2.20 KS1 MULTISKILLS: On Wednesday morning 10 children from Year 1 and 2 took part in a multi-skills competition against Montagu academy. They took part in events based around throwing, jumping and running. The children were a credit to the school. Overall, Barnburgh scored 20 points and Montagu scored 10 points, making us the winners! Well done to all the children.
11.2.20 Valentines Disco- Year one enjoyed dancing the night away and playing games with Early Years and KS1.
10.2.20- Computing: The children had a go at using the laptops and completing a drawing on a paint program. The children found it difficult at first but they persevered.
School nurse: Safe Touch- The school nurse came into Year One to discuss safe touch. We spoke about safe and unsafe places as well as an activity which enabled children to identify where they thought safe places were. The children ended the session watching the Pantosaurus song which they enjoyed singing along to.
ENGAGE RE- 20/01/2020 Children worked in Walts Wood to make a safe space by den building. Children worked in teams to make a den for a given object or person. We had certain key questions that we linked to this session such as ‘Why is it important to make it feel safe?’ ‘What can you add to it to make it safe and feel safe?’ The children reflected back on the previous lesson and photos.
15.01.2020 Engage- Making Slime The children found some slime over the rocket and the tables in the classroom. They passed the slime around and spoke about the texture of the slime and we had a discussion about where we thought it came from. The children were then given the opportunity to make some slime of their own. They worked in small groups and followed instructions to make their very own alien slime!
ENGAGE: Alien Ice balls 14.01.2020 There was a knock a the door and a year one friend was the first to spot the silver rock and went to go and get it but when he picked it up it was ice cold! The children took the ice cold, silver balls back into class to investigate them further. In class Miss Taylor could hear a strange noise coming from inside the silver ball and as we passed the ball around the class a lot of the children agreed they too could hear a strange noise. Very carefully the children opened up the silver ball and we were shocked to find two little aliens trapped inside a ball of ice. The children set off investigating how we could help to free the aliens from inside the ice balls and in the end we decided to try out three ideas. Our first idea was to put the ice ball in a sink of hot water, the second idea was to put it by the radiator and the third was to wrap it in paper towels and towels. The children then predicted which of their ideas would work best and then we set off testing our ideas to see if we were right.
ENGAGE: Rocket crash landing- Year One heard a bang outside and were keen to investigate. The children looked outside for clues and came across the crash scene and they couldn't believe their eyes! The children found slime, moon rocks and a broken down rocket. To top it off we found 2 alien eggs!! The children were excited to tell everybody about what had happened.
Autumn- Paws, Claws and Whiskers.
