Hello Year 1,
Welcome back to our final half term in Year 1. Thank you all so much for the photos and messages that we have continued to receive over the last few weeks! Not forgetting the amazing videos of you learning to ride bikes, playing in the sun and reading we both love seeing all the amazing things that you have been doing at home! The Zoom chats have become our favourite time of the week. We’ve made airplanes, dinosaurs and snakes, we’ve managed scavenger hunts and fun games. It is great to see you laughing and playing along with each other and the excitement of telling us about what you’ve been doing and showing us your many creations!
This half term we are continuing with our topic of ‘Dinosaur Planet’’. Have a look on the Year 1 home learning subject pages for new learning for Phonics, Guided Reading, Maths, English and Topic. Remember that if you need resources sending home please do not hesitate to get in contact with me and I will arrange for them to be sent out.
Miss Machin will continue to set her Phonics Challenges, we have both been blown away with the effort and time you’ve put into completing these and we can’t wait to see what you will get up to this half term! I know Miss Machin has some very amazing activities planned. In addition to this, Mrs Kilby has started to produce some amazing Art lessons which you can follow along with at home! The videos can be found on the website home page under the more tab at the very bottom call ‘Art with Mrs Kilby’ It would be brilliant if you could send any completed art to Mrs Kilby’s e-mail address - m.kilby@barnburghprimary.com
Please don’t forget to keep sending your pictures and videos over of all the things that you have been doing at home and keep a look out for the Zoom invites! Remember that we are here to help... always!
Keep smiling, stay safe and I hope to see you soon Year 1!

The skill of reading is one of the most important we teach our children. It is a life skill that enables them to extend their concepts, gain information as the basis for other learning and to gain access to the magical world of fantasy. Click on the link below to find out some fantastic books you could read with your child at home!

Phonics in Year 1
Phonics is taught on a daily basis within class. The children will receive a 30 minute phonics session at the beginning of the day. The phonics will then be reinforced through guided reading, literacy and all other lessons. Below are the sounds which will be taught in Year 1.

Phonics Screening
The phonics screening check is taken individually by all children in Year 1 in England, and is usually taken in June. It is designed to give teachers and parents information on how your child is progressing in phonics. There are two sections in this 40-word check and it assesses phonics skills and knowledge learned through Reception and Year 1. The children will be given real and nonsense words.
It checks that your child can:
- Sound out and blend graphemes in order to read simple words.
- Read phonically decodable one-syllable and two-syllable words, e.g. cat, sand, windmill.
- Read a selection of nonsense words which are referred to as pseudo words.
You can download a copy of the 2018 Phonics screening check from the gov.uk website, here. This will give you an idea of what the check looks like and what is expected.
