Learning to shine together

Year 1

Summer 1 welcome from Miss Yates and Miss Cull

What a fantastic start to this half term. We have been so impressed with all your topic challenges, thank you for all your effort.

This half term, we’re going to discover that animals come in all shapes and sizes! Meeting an animal expert will allow us to ask and answer questions, share information about the pets we have at home and write animal information booklets. We’ll study animal artwork, draw detailed animal pictures to capture their special features and make collages, sculptures and prints. Famous animal fables will make us laugh, and we will have fun reading them aloud. We’ll spot similarities and differences between animals, look at different habitats around the world and investigate camouflage. Designing a zoo is even on the agenda!

We will be continuing to focus on the basic skills across the curriculum. In this respect there will continue to be a strong focus on developing skills such as handwriting, reading, spelling and mathematics. In English this half term our writing opportunities will focus on the book Meerkat Mail, writing a recount and writing our own Fables. In maths the focus will be on equal groups and sharing. Reading will see children build on the phonics skills they are working so hard on as well as developing the ability to predict, infer, retrieve and discuss.

As a school, the expectation (2 stars) is for children to read 3 times a week at home with an adult. This should be recorded on the home learning sheets each week. As a class we will be running a reading challenge this half term. Children who read three times a week across 6 weeks of the half term will be put into a special prize draw.

Children's books will be changed weekly on a Friday. They will receive 2 books linked to the phonics phase in which they are currently working and another book of choice from our class library. Each child should be bringing 3 books home per week. We keep a reading record in school to monitor which titles the children have read.

Please could we ask that PE kits are sent into school on a MONDAY and remain in school all week. It is really important that children have both indoor and outdoor kits in school. With the cold weather, please could you ensure that children have a warm jumper or zip top. However this cannot have a hood attached. Unfortunately children without PE kits will be unable to complete the PE sessions.

We look forward to seeing you at the phonics workshops next week. During these sessions you will find out more about how phonics is taught in school and the changes we will be making to the weekly homework.

We are in the process of assessing every child's spelling ability over the course of the next two weeks. As a result weekly spellings will be sent out from week 3. These will be taken from the year 1 common exception words that every child should be able to read and spell by the end of year 1. Once we have completed a baseline for your child, we will share this information with you.

Homework - Issued on a Friday. Should be returned on Thursday in the clear homework bag.

Spellings - Children will be issued with weekly spellings. Any errors will be recorded and tested the following week.

PE - PE kits should be in school from Monday. Normal PE days are Mondays (fortnightly) and Fridays (weekly)

We look forward to working with you and your child this term

Thank you for your support.
