Learning to shine together

Foundation Stage 2

Summer 1 welcome from Miss Taylor

I hope you have all enjoyed half term. We had a short term in Spring but it was extremely busy with lots of learning and fun activities. I would like to thank you all for attending F2’s Express Event. the children always love sharing their learning with you all and enjoy exploring the environment with you. Thank you to the parent’s who filled out a questionnaire, if you haven't already they can be collected from the coat area on the notice board.

This half term we will be starting a new topic called “What is a reflection and a shadow?’ We will be carrying out lots of fun and engaging opportunities regarding this topic. Possible lines of enquiry with this topic consist of reflections, symmetry, shadow, light and dark along with other aspects. However, children’s interests are followed and these are subject to change.

Our first text this half term will be ‘The Ugly Duckling’. The children will also be introduced to a number of fiction and non-fiction texts to enhance their learning opportunities related to our topic.

In Phonics, Mrs Peace’s group will be continuing to learn the Phase 3 phonemes, digraphs and trigraphs, this will include new tricky words. Please look at the online Letters and Sounds Phase 3 scheme to support your child with their learning. Other children will be recapping Phase 3 to ensure they are secure in this phase and able to recognise and apply their learning into their work. I will be introducing Phase 4 tricky words, these will be sent home in due course.

In Maths, the children will be learning about numbers and shape, space and measures. Children should be able to recognise and use numbers to 20, they will secure their knowledge with numbers to 20 and be able to apply their knowledge of numbers with adding and subtracting etc. Doubling, halving and sharing will also be introduced. Alongside this, we will be looking at 3D shapes. This will include talking about the properties of the shapes as well as using the language related to shape confidently.

2Simple: Thank you to the parent’s who have provided their email addresses. 2 simple is a quick way to share your child’s learning as well as you feeding back about home experiences. Hopefully, if I have all email addresses in by the end of next week we can use the online parent share instead of Proud Parent slips. Thank you for your support with this transition. You need to accept and reply to emails when they are sent.

Phonics: I would encourage you to continue recapping Phase 2 and 3 sounds with your child as well as tricky words and high frequency words. If you need any further resources, I am happy to provide them.

Reading: Children should be becoming more confident with segmenting and blending words and this should also be encouraged through reading at least 3 times a week with your child to enhance fluency and reading on sight. (Share– a– Books are changed Thursday’s, reading books are changed Friday’s)

Creative Area: A popular area in our Early Years Unit is the Creative Area. In this area children are able to bring their creations to life! If you have any recyclable materials such as cardboard boxes, plastic containers, bottle tops or tubes then we would love to put them to good use and who knows what they will become next.

I look forward to working with you and your child this half term.
