Year 5 2018 to 2019
Firstly, we’d like to welcome you and your child to Year 5 and introduce the team for the next academic year. It has been a real pleasure getting to know the children over the past few days and I hope we have the opportunity to work together to ensure your child has a fantastic and smooth journey throughout the year.
Year 5 is a great year for the children and presents many exciting learning and personal opportunities. The children will be encouraged to take responsibility for their own learning and development as well as setting an excellent example to younger members of the school through positive behaviour, attitude and learning behaviours.
This term sees the children embark on a brand new learning journey called ‘Pharaohs’. This topic is centred round Ancient Egypt and sees the children explore many exciting and engaging activities across the curriculum. In particular the children will focus on history, geography, ICT and design technology.
In English, the children will be working hard to develop their knowledge and skills in a variety of genres. These include: newspaper reports, recounts and an informative piece of writing on democracy. In addition, they will continue to develop their spelling, punctuation, grammar and handwriting skills.
In Mathematics, we will continue to develop our skills across key areas, such as place value, addition and subtraction. They will also have a short daily arithmetic session in order to develop their skills across the four operations.
Reminders PE - Year 5 will have PE on a Monday (Please remember correct PE kit including out-door trainers for all sessions)
Home Learning Tasks – Your child will receive a variety of home learning tasks throughout the half term to consolidate and develop their learning. They should also be encouraged to read at home independently or with an adult. As the children become more confident readers we would like to encourage them to read a variety of different genres.
