Learning to shine together

Year 5 2018 to 2019

Dear Parents/Carers,

Firstly, we would like to wish everyone a happy new year. We hope everyone had an amazing and relaxing time with families and friends over the Christmas period.

It is certainly hard to believe we are now a third of the way through the year. The autumn term was certainly packed full of learning and experiences. We were extremely proud of the effort the children showed during the Christmas concert and rehearsals and also especially pleased with the care and compassion they have shown to each otherThe children have been a credit to themselves all term.

During the autumn term we continued to learn about the Ancient Egyptians and also looked at the Sikh religion. During November we investigated the theme of Remembrance. This involved looking at why we celebrate remembrance and producing poppy themed artwork. In literacy the children wrote stories about time travelling to Ancient Egyptwrite reports on Egyptian Gods and produced Newspaper reports on the discovery of Tutankhamun’s tomb. In mathematics we developed skills in the areas of addition, subtraction, place vale and statistics. The children also cooked some spectacular and delicious flat breads which I know lots of you enjoyed at our express event.

This term sees the children embark on a journey into space through our exciting new topic called ‘Stargazers’, I know the children have already enjoyed a trip to the National Space Centre and are eager to learn more. During the topic the children will investigate scientific issues relating to the Earth and the Solar System as well as investigating gravity and forces. The topic will also allow children to look at the moon landings and a chance to build and test our own rockets! As writers we will write space themed adventures, poetry and newspaper reports. As mathematicians the focus will be on fractions, decimals and percentages. To enable the children to access the learning more easily it would be appreciated if they could be encouraged to continue learning their times tables at home.

During this term we will be sending further information regarding the introduction of swimming lessons which will take place every Wednesday afternoon.

Reminders PE - Year 5 will have PE on a Monday

Home work – reading at home at least three times a week, learning spellings and times tables
