Welcome to Year 3                  Teacher: Miss Cull             TA: Mrs Millington

Spring 2 Letter

Dear Parents/Carers,

Welcome back to school! I’ve been so impressed with all of the amazing RE challenge learning the children have done over the holidays, everyone has been so creative and ambitious with their learning. Check out the website for photos.

This term we will continue with our topic ‘Tremors of the Gods and Mortals’. We will create artwork around the disaster at Pompeii and find out about battle tactics of the Ancient Greek armies!

Our next express event will be on Wednesday 3rd April at 9am.

Well done to the lucky winner of the Term 3 Reading challenge, Jorge; who picked a fantastic new book to take home. Please support your child with reading as much as possible, I am impressed by the continued commitment of some children to read everyday, every week. You can really see this reading coming through in their writing as they “magpie” ideas, we have had some amazing narratives about Theseus and the Minotaur last half term.

In Maths this half term we will be learning about Length and Perimeter, Shape and start to look at Fractions towards the end of the term. The Key Instant Recall facts for this term are facts around the 4 times tables. Children who regularly access TTRockstars are showing big improvements in their recall of times tables. TTRockstars has now changed their algorithm so that it only progresses children to their next tables when they are able to answer the current set quickly enough. This may seem easy, but it builds confidence and fluency within the times tables. Please encourage your children to make this a regular practice as they need to be ready for the tables test in Year 4. Only five minutes a day makes all the difference, little and often is much better than once a week.

In English, we will be writing diary entries and practising giving instructions and commands. I have been really impressed with everyone’s ambition in their writing last term so let’s continue to Aim High! Some children will receive handwriting practise for home, please support them with this.

As during the previous term, PE is on Mondays. Please make sure that children bring their kit on Monday and take it home at the weekend. As well as this we will be continuing the Daily Mile every afternoon.

Thank you for your continued support and your feedback during the Parent Meetings.

We asked children from Karori West Normal School in Wellington, New Zealand, some of our questions about earthquakes, they were kind enough to send us videos of their answers
