Foundation Stage 2

Welcome from Miss Taylor

Date: 12th January 2018

I hope you have all had a fantastic Christmas and you have all had a well earned rest, ready for the next fun filled half term. I would like to take this opportunity to say thank you for your support with your child’s learning. It is great to see how much they are engaging in their learning and how enthusiastic they are to enhance their knowledge.

This term our topic is called “Why do ladybirds have spots?”. Your child will experience stimulating and engaging activities covering a wide range of subjects, these may change due to children’s interests. This topic has a variety of subjects which it could cover such as mini-beasts, the environment, plants, flowers, growth, change, similarities and differences.

Our first text this term will be ‘The Hungry Caterpillar’, which many children are already familiar with. The children will also be introduced to a number of fiction and non-fiction texts as well to enhance their learning opportunities related to our topic, especially mini-beasts. In Phonics, some children are still recapping Phase 2. It is important for you to recap these sounds with your child as well as tricky words and high frequency words, so they can make the link between sounds and letters when writing. Other children are learning new sounds in Phase 3, these mainly consist of digraphs and trigraphs, the children will learn four sounds a week and 2 tricky words. I will send these home regularly. You can follow the Letters and Sound scheme online and many resources are available to support your child’s learning. Please continue to read at least 3 times a week with your child to help with segmenting and blending, fluency and reading more words on sight.

In Maths, the children will be learning about numbers. Children should be secure with numbers to 5 and others will progress to 10 and 20. They should be able to recognise numbers, write them, select the right amount of objects to represent the number and they should do this reliably. Please continue to practise numbers with your child. Alongside this, we will be looking at length or height and weight or capacity. This will include comparing objects and sizes as well as using the language related to these topics.

Reminders:
Home Learning: This will be sent out every Friday. Home learning is due in to school on a Thursday. Please remember to return this. 2Simple: We are now moving to online learning journeys, although current learning journeys will still be used this will only be to put in independent learning. A letter has been sent out to explain the new way we will be recording observations etc. Show and Tell: If your child has achieved a medal or certificate I am more than happy for them to bring this in as well as sharing something they may have made. Children sharing special news is also welcomed. Open door policy: I am available to speak at the end of the day to address any queries you may have.
I look forward to working with you and your child this half term. Miss Taylor and Mrs Peace
