Foundation Stage 1
Summer 1 welcome from Mrs Kay
Welcome back to Foundation Stage 1 for our final term! We hope that you and your children have all had a relaxing Easter holiday. We ended last half term with a brilliant Express Event for our topic ‘Why do ladybirds have spots?’ The children thoroughly enjoyed welcoming you into our unit to share their learning with you. Thank you to everyone who attended and to those of you who completed a parent questionnaire.
Thank you for your support with our new record of observations through the software 2Simple. We really do appreciate your input to the children’s learning journeys and these observations form a key part of this. If you have anything you would like to add, please reply to one of the emails containing the reports sent to you.
Our Summer term 1 topic is ’What is a shadow?’ and ’What is a reflection?’ During this topic, we will be following the children’s interests. Possible lines of enquiry include reflections, symmetry, shadow, light and dark, where light comes from, etc.
We have already begun learning about this through our first key text ‘The Ugly Duckling’. We will explore this story by looking at the different characters and reflecting on their words. We will be focusing on a range of other fiction and non-fiction texts. Please see our topic board to find out our book for the fortnight.
In Maths, we will be learning about 3D shapes as well as discussing the vocabulary related to time. We will also be continuing our number learning by working confidently with numbers up to and beyond 10. As well as this, we will be learning about basic addition and subtraction.
Home Learning: This half term, the children will receive a new focus for the learning logs. This will be sent home with this newsletter.
Proud Parent Slips: If you are particularly proud of something your child has done, said or that you have observed, please use the Proud Parent slips to tell us about it. We will use these to support our evidence collection and it will be placed in the children’s learning journey. Alternatively, these can now be added to 2Simple by replying to an email sent to you including the reports.
Water bottles, book bags and uniform: Please send your child to school with a water bottle. Please ensure water bottles, book bags and uniform is clearly labelled with your child’s name.
Phonics: We have begun using a new Phonics scheme for lessons. This includes new handwriting rhymes for supporting children in forming each of the letters and later rhymes for the sounds they learn. A copy of the handwriting rhymes will be sent home for your information.
Creative area: Please can you send in any unwanted recyclable materials such as cardboard boxes, bottle tops and tubes.
We look forward to continuing to work with you and your child throughout this exciting first year in school.
Mrs Kay, Mrs Millington and Mrs Norman.
